It would be most chefs' dream to have a rich and varied herb garden at their disposal and a plentiful supply of fresh herbs to hand for their culinary creations. Whilst this may not be possible for us mere kitchen mortals, there is no reason why we can't grow a small selection at home, even if we're confined to an urban balcony, window box or just a couple of pots on the window sill.

Very few people, nowadays, have the space, time or resources to create a fantastic geometrical herb garden. We may associate these designs on a grand scale more with stately country homes but we all of us have a little space, even a window box, that can be utilised to grow some herbs that can add a little variety and interest to our cooking. Yes ........ we can buy everything we need in convenient little packets and jars of dried leaves and seeds straight off the supermarket shelves .......... but where is the fun in that? There is nothing like the feeling of gathering your own home-grown herbs from your own little patch of soil and chopping them fresh for the pot. The scent itself is reward enough for the effort. Below are just a few of the places you can find to plant up your herbs and add some fresh tastes to your menu.

Small pots on the window ledge. You can't get much simpler than this. Line up a few small pots of various diameters on the window sill. You can use some to germinate seedlings in and others to grow them on or you can directly plant up herbs like mint that readily grow from splitting or cuttings. Pots can be painted to add a little fun and colour to the kitchen or to personalise pots of herbs grown by the kids.

Window boxes, pots, planters and balcony gardens. Collections of plastic planters and clay pots of various sizes are always a popular way of growing herbs and using them to add impact and colourful foilage to even the most artificial of yards, balconies or patios. They enable the grower to cultivate and grow on a good number of mature plants. Pots containing more delicate varieties may be moved under cover in the colder months.

Kitchen gardens and herb corners. Some herbs love the freedom that only a garden can give and will grow almost anywhere; others are particularly picky and will confine themselves only to areas with certain conditions. Raised beds and artificial rockeries may appeal to some herbs and can be used to add some visual interest to the hard landscaping in your garden's herb corner.
